How Bosch Became a Kitchen Powerhouse - Part 2

In the decades after World War II, Bosch's household-appliance business grew alongside changing expectations of everyday life. Washing, food preparation, dishwashing, refrigeration, and cooking gradually became more automated and integrated into the home.

Part 1 covered Bosch's early entry into household appliances, including its first refrigerator and the 1949 sonic washer. From the 1950s onward, Bosch and later BSH expanded this work into a broader range of appliances designed to reduce the time and effort required for household tasks.

Building the Laundry and Kitchen Lineup

1951–1964

The postwar years brought rapid change to household technology across West Germany. In 1951, an independent manufacturer founded by engineer Peter Pfenningsberg introduced the Constructa, widely recognized as Germany's first fully automatic front-loading washing machine with a front porthole glass door. Constructa's 1955 model, the Deluxe 100, captured roughly 80 percent of the German laundry market.

While Constructa would not become part of the Bosch family until years later—acquired by Siemens in 1961, and subsequently folded into the joint Bosch-Siemens venture (BSH) in 1967—its early success set the technological benchmark for the entire industry.

Bosch quickly entered the race to modernize German homes. In 1952, Bosch introduced the Neuzeit I, its first electrically powered universal kitchen machine. Designed to replace an array of manual kitchen gadgets, it handled stirring, kneading, chopping, shredding, puréeing, grinding, and grating with a single motorized base.

In 1958, Bosch began series production of washing machines. This marked a further step in the company's expansion from individual household products into a broader appliance range.

Bosch began developing household dishwashers in 1960. A dedicated dishwasher-development department followed in 1961, and the company established a laboratory to test washing and drying performance under reproducible conditions. Engineers worked on practical problems involving spray systems, detergent dispensing, water softening, pumps, heaters, dish racks, and materials that could withstand detergents, rinse aids, and salt.

Bosch produced a pilot series of ten dishwashers in October 1963. Its first household dishwasher, the HSA, appeared at trade fairs in 1964, and volume production began in March 1965.

The BSH Turning Point

1967

In 1967, Robert Bosch GmbH and Siemens AG combined their household-appliance activities in a 50–50 joint venture: Bosch-Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH. The company later became known as BSH.

The new business brought together the appliance operations of two major German engineering companies. Over time, BSH expanded its manufacturing base and portfolio of household-appliance brands.

Dishwashing Becomes a Core Strength

1969–2000

Bosch's earliest dishwasher was a freestanding unit mounted on castor wheels. Many kitchens at the time did not have a permanent space beside a water supply and drain, so the machine could be moved to the sink when needed. Users connected the inlet hose to the faucet and placed the wastewater hose in the sink.

These first models had limitations. On the inside, they were made from PVC-coated sheet steel, which sometimes rusted. They also used a single spray arm located at the bottom of the machine. One can think that this created challenges in cleaning the dishes in the upper racks.

In 1969, Bosch introduced a second generation of dishwashers. There were major improvements. The new machines used stainless-steel tubs, which addressed corrosion concerns. Bosch also added a separate spray arm for the upper basket, improved systems for dispensing detergent, rinse aid, and salt, and made the machines quieter than their predecessors.

During the 1970s, dishwashers became easier to fit into built-in kitchens. Manufacturers adapted appliance dimensions and developed frames and decorative-panel options that allowed dishwashers to blend more closely with surrounding cabinetry.

BSH also expanded beyond Germany. In 1976, it acquired a stake in the Greek appliance manufacturer Pitsos, extending its manufacturing presence in southern Europe.

In 1985, AquaStop introduced an important safety development for dishwashers. The system was designed to protect against water damage by stopping the water supply when a leak was detected.

Two years later, in 1987, BSH introduced its first 45-centimeter dishwasher. The slimmer format provided an option for kitchens where a standard-width appliance would not fit.

In 1996, BSH introduced AquaSensor technology. This detected how dirty the water was and helped to adjust the wash program of the machine. Overall, there was a broader shift toward appliances that can use less water and less energy.

By 2000, Bosch had presented its first fully automatic dishwasher. Sensors measured the degree of soiling and adjusted washing time and water use. This was a true adaptive product and it was no longer relying on just a single program.

The Efficiency Revolution

2001–2013

During the early 2000s, BSH continued to focus on reducing the water and energy required for dishwashing.

A major advance arrived in 2008 with Zeolith drying technology. Zeolite is a mineral with a high capacity to absorb moisture. When it absorbs water, it releases energy in the form of heat. In a dishwasher, warm air generated through this process can be returned to the appliance interior, accelerating drying and helping shorten the wash program.

Bosch states that Zeolith technology can save up to 20 percent of energy per wash cycle. It also improved drying performance, particularly for items such as plastic containers that can retain moisture after a conventional dishwasher cycle.

The longer history of dishwasher development shows the scale of these efficiency gains. Bosch reports that a dishwasher cycle in the 1960s could use about 60 liters of water and 2.3 kilowatt-hours of electricity. A modern eco program can use around 6 liters of water and 0.5 kilowatt-hours.

The Connected-Home Era

Mid-2010s–Today

During the mid-2010s, BSH expanded into connected appliances through Home Connect. The platform allows compatible appliances to communicate with a smartphone app. Depending on the appliance and model, users may be able to monitor programs, receive notifications, access product information, and use selected remote functions.

In 2015, the story came full circle. Nearly five decades after joining forces with Siemens to weather European market competition, Robert Bosch GmbH bought out Siemens' 50-percent stake for €3 billion. BSH became a wholly owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, bringing the entire global appliance operation back under sole Bosch ownership.

Today, BSH manufactures appliances across categories including cooking, refrigeration, dishwashing, laundry, and food preparation. Its brand portfolio includes Bosch, Siemens, Gaggenau, Thermador, Constructa, and other regional brands.

A Speculative Look at the Kitchen of 2040

By 2040, kitchens may become more automated and energy-aware. Appliances could be designed to disappear more fully into cabinetry and work surfaces, making the kitchen feel less like a collection of machines and more like part of the living space.

Cooking surfaces may become more flexible, potentially allowing cookware to be positioned more freely than on today's fixed induction zones. Imagine putting your pasta pot just anywhere on your kitchen island, and the appliance detecting its position? It sure sounds futuristic.

Refrigeration could become more modular. After all, storing your eggs is different from keeping a cheesecake at perfect temperature. Different storage areas can give you different temperatures and humidity levels for all kinds of different foods.

The Ever-Evolving Home

From Bosch's first series-produced washing machines to modern dishwashers, the company's household-appliance history reflects a long effort to make domestic work more manageable.

The most important changes have often been practical rather than dramatic: improved washing performance, reduced water use, better drying, quieter operation, greater protection against leaks, and appliances that fit more naturally into kitchens.

Bosch and BSH did not invent every household appliance category they entered. Their role was to refine and industrialize technologies over time, applying engineering and design to the changing needs of households.

  • Car parts directly saved the first dishwasher: When Bosch engineers set up their first dishwashing test lab in 1961, harsh dishwasher detergents and acidic rinse aids kept dissolving the internal rubber gaskets and plastics. The appliance division had to borrow chemical engineers from Bosch's automotive division, who took time away from testing heat-resistant plastics for car distributor caps to help formulate synthetic materials tough enough to survive a hot wash cycle.

  • Electric hair clippers inspired the power drill: In 1928, a Bosch subsidiary introduced an electric hair-cutting machine called the Forfex, which housed a tiny electric motor directly inside the grip handle.
